    In short. In 2026 Spanish residence is granted for employment, remote work for a foreign employer (digital nomad), an entrepreneurial project with an ENISA report, self-employment, passive income without the right to work, family reunification and other grounds of Spanish law. The investor golden visa for buying property was abolished on 3 April 2025. Ukrainians with temporary protection may, since 16 April 2026, apply for another permit without leaving Spain. We prepare the Ukrainian part of the file: apostilled certificates and extracts, powers of attorney and, where needed, a Spanish company.

    The residence ground is chosen by source of income and purpose of the move. Each ground has its own requirements for funds, health insurance and documents, and registering a company does not by itself give a residence permit. Below are the regimes in force in October 2026 with references to Spanish law, and the documents usually needed from Ukraine.

    Grounds for Spanish residence in 2026

    Key conditionsPermit term
    Non-lucrative residence (no right to work)Funds of at least 400% of IPREM per month for the applicant and 100% of IPREM per family member, health insurance, criminal record certificate. Digital nomad (teletrabajo de carácter internacional)Remote work for a company outside Spain; freelancers may do up to 20% of their work for Spanish clients. A degree or at least 3 years of experience. Income of 200% of the minimum wage SMI (SMI 2026: EUR 1,221 a month paid 14 times a year), plus supplements for family (arts. 74 bis–quinquies of Law 14/2013).Visa up to 1 year, permit up to 3 years, renewals of 2 years

    Amounts in the table are legal requirements; our fees are quoted separately. Which SMI basis consulates use for the digital nomad visa (14 or 12 payments a year) is checked with the specific consulate before filing.

    Ukrainians with temporary protection

    • TIE cards with temporary protection were automatically extended to 4 March 2027 (Orden INT/96/2026);
    • the EU extended temporary protection to 4 March 2028; a Spanish order for that date is pending;
    • since 16 April 2026 a holder of temporary protection may apply from within Spain for other permits, including arraigo and permits under Law 14/2013 (entrepreneur, digital nomad, Blue Card) (DA 19 of RD 1155/2024);
    • Spanish law does not say expressly whether years under temporary protection count towards the five years for long-term residence, so the transition plan should leave a margin.

    For a new residence ground the Ukrainian documents are usually filed again, with an apostille and a translation.

    Long-term residence and citizenship

    Long-term residence (residencia de larga duración) is granted after 5 years of continuous legal residence; absences of up to 6 consecutive months and no more than 10 months in total over five years do not break continuity (art. 32 of Organic Law 4/2000, art. 176 RD 1155/2024). Citizenship by residence follows after 10 years, with the DELE exam at A2 or higher and the CCSE test. A Ukrainian citizen must renounce the previous nationality (arts. 22–23 of the Spanish Civil Code).

    Documents from Ukraine for Spanish residence

    • a paper criminal record certificate with apostille: for non-lucrative residence from every country of residence in the last 5 years; for Law 14/2013 permits for the last 2 years plus a declaration covering 5 years (art. 62.3 of Law 14/2013);
    • birth and marriage certificates, duplicate certificates and civil register extracts with apostille;
    • Ukrainian business register extracts if you prove business income;
    • powers of attorney for a representative in Ukraine if you are already abroad.

    Spanish authorities accept translations by a sworn translator (traductor jurado). How we obtain the documents remotely: documents from Ukraine for a residence permit in Spain.

    A Spanish company and residence

    A foreigner without residence can set up an SL with capital from EUR 1, but for the entrepreneur permit what matters is the business plan and the ENISA report, and for self-employment the investment and social security registration.     • obtain certificates and extracts in Ukraine under a power of attorney and have them apostilled;
    • deliver the originals to you or your lawyer in Spain;
    • register a Spanish company if your plan needs one.

    Can I still get Spanish residence by buying property?

    No. The golden visa was abolished on 3 April 2025 by Organic Law 1/2025. Permits issued earlier remain valid until expiry; new applications are not accepted.

    How much money is needed for non-lucrative residence?

    At least 400% of IPREM per month for the applicant and 100% per family member (art. 61 RD 1155/2024). With IPREM at EUR 600 this is EUR 2,400 and EUR 600 a month; the figure moves with IPREM.

    Can Ukrainians with temporary protection switch to another permit without leaving Spain?

    Yes, since 16 April 2026: DA 19 of RD 1155/2024 allows applications from within Spain for arraigo and Law 14/2013 permits. TIE cards with temporary protection are extended to 4 March 2027.

    Does registering a company in Spain give residence?

    Not by itself. The entrepreneur permit needs a favourable ENISA report on the business plan; the self-employment permit needs a visa, sufficient investment and social security registration.

    When can I get long-term residence and Spanish citizenship?

    Long-term residence after 5 years of continuous legal residence. Citizenship by residence after 10 years, with DELE A2 and CCSE and renunciation of Ukrainian citizenship.
